Before you rap on others about their habits, look at your own. Self-awareness is key to growing your business. Are you focused on how good you and your business look, or how well it operates? Yes, a sexy website and fancy workout clothes have their place, but they don’t replace the unsexy grunt work that makes or breaks your business.

You know how some people will spend days, weeks, or even months searching for the perfect running shoes before going out for their first run? It’s a trick the mind plays on us to delay doing the hard thing—running—with something that feels productive but actually isn’t. Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean you have to give in to it. Tell yourself the worst action is no action at all, and get something done.

The importance of delayed gratification is clear: Those who delay rewards and play the long game are more likely to succeed in life. However, as human beings, we crave small rewards as an incentive to continue, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Instead of fighting it, look for ways to give yourself small rewards for your work. You’ll avoid burnout, and over time get more work done than you thought possible.
